NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – During a training exercise at Mount Bundey on Monday, a military vehicle rollover resulted in the death of a 28-year-old Australian Army soldier, with five additional personnel sustaining injuries. The Australian Defence Force confirmed the accident on Tuesday and informed that the soldier’s family has been notified. The incident took place at the Mount Bundey Training Area, approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. Defence urged the public to respect the privacy of those affected and their families.

Northern Territory Police responded to the training site around 4:20 p.m. on October 5. CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance also arrived at the scene. Emergency personnel evacuated two injured soldiers by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital around 7:30 p.m., while three others were transported by aircraft approximately two hours later, at around 9:30 p.m. All five injured soldiers remained hospitalized on Tuesday. Authorities from the Northern Territory supported the medical evacuations from the isolated military training location.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, Chief of Army, stated that Defence had initiated an investigation into the fatal rollover. Military police secured the scene, and a land accident investigation board will examine the details of the incident. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole said police are assisting Defence and conducting an investigation on behalf of the coroner. The cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed. Coyle mentioned that investigators need time to determine what transpired before the Army can respond to their findings.
Investigation Underway
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen soldier. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles also expressed his sympathies, describing the loss as a tragic blow to the Army. Defence affirmed its support for the families affected by the incident. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also issued condolences and thanked the emergency teams involved in transferring the injured soldiers from Mount Bundey to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey serves as a key Australian Army training location situated southeast of Darwin, used by both Australian and allied forces for various exercises, including live-fire drills. The recent death follows another Australian Army training-related fatality earlier in 2026, when Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a soldier from the Special Air Service Regiment, died in May after a mid-air collision during parachute training at Jervis Bay. Another paratrooper involved in that incident survived with minor injuries.
Previous Fatality at Mount Bundey
The Mount Bundey Training Area was also the scene of a fatal incident in 2017 when Private Jason Challis lost his life during a live-fire urban training exercise. A coronial inquest in the Northern Territory later examined the circumstances surrounding his death. The Department of Defence subsequently pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court to failing to meet its workplace health and safety responsibilities. The current rollover incident in 2026 is a separate event and remains under investigation.
The Defence Department has not publicly identified the soldier who died in Monday’s rollover beyond confirming his age and gender. No details about his unit or the specific activity underway at the time have been released. The Australian Defence Force indicated that additional information will be shared when available. Police continue supporting the coroner’s investigation, while the Army conducts an internal review. Authorities have yet to determine the reasons behind the vehicle rollover or identify the factors that contributed to the tragic outcome.
