Retro Phone Accessories Emerge Amid Shifts in Smartphone Usage Habits

PERTH, AUSTRALIA / RankWire.AI / – In Australia, recent research highlights a growing interest in retro phone accessories as a means to modify daily smartphone engagement. Over the past decade, Edith Cowan University researcher Dr Jess Hardley has explored evolving phone habits among Australian users. Her latest investigation focuses on devices like wall-mounted smartphone docks, traditional-style handsets, and other tools designed to limit constant device access. The study also considers everyday practices individuals adopt to make their devices less immediately accessible.

Retro phone accessories reshape smartphone habits
Smartphone users are adopting physical and digital barriers to reduce constant phone access.

Hardley observed behaviors ranging from leaving phones in separate rooms to locking them away in drawers. Some participants also alter their screens to greyscale or impose restrictions on specific apps. For instance, one individual stored a phone in a work drawer after mobile gaming began to interfere with their concentration. While the methods vary, they share a common feature: each creates a physical or digital barrier between the user and their device during certain times of the day.

The research also examines accessories that make smartphones resemble traditional landline phones. Wall-mounted docks serve to keep a device stationary rather than carried in a pocket or held in hand. Some connected handsets are designed with features reminiscent of older home phones, including coiled cords. Hardley’s study includes these products alongside phone-free gatherings and locking pouches used at concerts. The research does not establish that these items enhance health, attention, or wellbeing.

    Various Forms of Smartphone Detachment

Hardley’s publication explores the transformation of mobile phones from portable communication tools into devices integrated into everyday routines. Modern smartphones now combine messaging, entertainment, payments, photography, navigation, work functions, and internet access. Her research emphasizes how deliberate efforts to make these devices less accessible affect user behavior. Physical separation is one strategy among others, including restrictions in homes, workplaces, events, and shared environments.

The study titled Revisiting the ‘Snug Tether’: Smartphones in an Era of Scroll-Free Social Events, Landline Accessories, and Device Bans appeared in M/C Journal. It revisits earlier insights into the close relationship between users and their phones, now expanded to include phone jails, social events free of scrolling, retro accessories, and device restrictions. Edith Cowan University noted that this research highlights practices that disrupt the often constant proximity associated with smartphone use.

Public Settings Also See Adoption of Phone Restrictions

In Australia, restrictions on smartphones have been implemented in public schools. Starting Term 1 of 2024, all public schools will either ban or restrict mobile phone use, as agreed upon by education ministers. Subsequently, federal education authorities referenced a survey of nearly 1,000 principals in New South Wales conducted after the rules took effect. The government reported that 87% of respondents observed fewer distractions in classrooms, and 81% noted improved learning outcomes since the restrictions were introduced.

Hardley’s work continues to focus on how individuals manage smartphones as they remain central to everyday routines. The study identifies physical separation, reduced accessibility, and phone-free environments as common strategies. Retro handsets and wall-mounted docks are among the methods highlighted within this broader context. Edith Cowan University released a summary of these findings on Aug. 18, 2026, adding fresh examples to ongoing research into smartphone habits and digital behavior.
